Remission & Recovery

A person in remission means that there is “no evidence of disease.” This may mean that the cancer is gone for good, and the patient is fully recovered. Patients in remission should still get regular checkups and screenings to ensure healthiness and talk with their doctor about what they should do to stay healthy.

Coping with Long-term Side Effects

While the cancer may be gone, long-term side effects from the cancer and the treatments may remain. These can include physical, emotional and even social issues. Our trained staff can help you navigate and overcome these challenges to live life to the fullest.

Preventing Recurrence

Individuals who have recovered from cancer should get regular screenings to ensure early diagnosis if their cancer returns. Each cancer will have specific risk factors, so talk to your doctor about how you can specifically prevent the return of the disease. Healthy life habits such as a good diet, exercise, fitness and staying away from drugs and alcohol will decrease a patient's chances of the cancer recurring.

Cancer Support Groups

At Infirmary Cancer Care, we also understand that cancer care must be a holistic approach. This is why we created cancer support groups. These groups in Mobile and on the Gulf Coast are great ways for patients to learn from fellow patients and get their questions answered. With a supportive environment and discussions and talks on wide-ranging topics related to the cancer experience, cancer support groups provide you the holistic support you need to complete treatment. If you or a loved one is struggling with cancer or is at a very high risk of cancer, join a cancer support group for information and help.

Pink Pearls Breast Cancer Support

The Breast Cancer Support Group meets at both the Mobile Infirmary and Thomas Hospital on the first Thursday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The goal of these groups is to provide a place for women suffering from breast cancer with a community where their fears can be assuaged, and their questions answered.

Pink Pearls currently meets virtually. Click here to register for the support group.

Cancer Caregiver’s Support Group

The Cancer Caregiver’s Support Group meets the first Wednesday of each month, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. in the Infirmary Cancer Care conference room, located on the campus of Mobile Infirmary. A cancer diagnosis affects close friends and family too. Find out what to expect if you become a caregiver for a person with cancer and get tips for making sure that you take care of yourself as well. This support group offers the opportunity to connect with others who share similar concerns and experiences. To register, visit the Infirmary Health events page.
