Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects 1-in-10 women. In addition to being one of the most common causes of female infertility, it can cause lifelong health issues.
Women with PCOS often experience
- Increased androgen levels
- Insulin resistance which increases the risk for Type 2 Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Sleep apnea
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk for endometrial cancer
Women of every age and ethnicity can have PCOS. While the exact causes behind PCOS are still being determined but a family history of insulin resistance and excess weight can be contributing factors.
Symptoms of PCOS can range from woman to woman. It is important that if you are experiencing excess acne or hair growth, irregular periods or have trouble getting pregnant, schedule an appointment with your OB-GYN provider to discuss your concerns.
