August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month and Infirmary Health is celebrating with special events, information and education.
Francie Ruzic, M.D., obstetrician and gynecologist with Mobile Bay OB-GYN Center at Infirmary Health spoke to FOX10 during the Making Rounds segment and discussed the value of breastfeeding, the importance of having support and breastfeeding education opportunities offered by Infirmary Health.
"For mom, breastfeeding has some really great benefits. First of all, moms who breastfeed are less likely to develop breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type two diabetes and hypertension," said Dr. Ruzie. "For your baby, breast milk is so incredible because it has the perfect combination of fats, protein, sugar, vitamins and minerals."
Infirmary Health's three hospitals, Mobile Infirmary, North Baldwin Infirmary and Thomas Hospital, provide support and education for lactating moms at free monthly Baby Bistro events. Those who attend the August group sessions will enjoy door prizes, refreshments, free Mom & Me photography session and self-care education from Infirmary Therapy Services. Dr. Ruzic also added that exclusive breastfeeding may not be for every mother. "I think something that's really important to express is that no matter how you're feeding your baby, your baby's getting fed and you're doing a really great job."
