Mobile, Ala. – Mobile Infirmary, an affiliate of Infirmary Health, has received approval by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to establish an internal medicine physician residency program beginning in June 2024. After three years, Mobile Infirmary’s Internal Medicine Residency Program will train 85 physician residents throughout Infirmary Health’s facilities.
Internal medicine physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum of health. The physician residents will rotate through Infirmary Health’s diverse medical service offerings including inpatient care, emergency services, outpatient medical clinics and a continuity clinic staffed by the resident physicians and board-certified faculty.
“We are excited to welcome a residency program to Mobile Infirmary,” shares Susan Boudreau, president of Mobile Infirmary. “While our hospital has been fortunate to train and develop new physicians for many years, this new program fulfills our long-term vision of doing so through Mobile Infirmary directly. This will allow us to recruit and retain more physicians to our region and care for all communities in South Alabama.”
With more than 20 years of experience in healthcare administration and academia, JoAnn Wood, MD will serve as residency program director. Dr. Wood earned her MD from the University of Louisville where she also completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency. She completed a fellowship in academic general internal medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She completed a Master of Science degree in Medical Education at the University of Southern California and a Master of Healthcare Administration at the University of Minnesota. She also completed the Intermountain Advanced Training Program in Health Care Delivery and Improvement. Dr. Wood is a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
