Healthy Her | Brain Training

Did you know your brain can learn and grow as you age? Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, is the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization. Growing your brain capacity takes practice, and these brain muscles can be flexed through brain training exercises.

Brain training can be practiced to help improve things like memory and general mental agility. Most of these exercises are in the form of games or puzzles and are often offered through apps or online programs. Other ways to brain train might look like learning a new language or learning to play an instrument. Choose an activity that challenges you to engage your brain and improve.

These games and puzzles try to improve your cognitive abilities by targeting what are referred to as “executive functions.” According to Psychology Today, executive functions are a set of cognitive processes and mental skills that help you plan, monitor, and execute goals. Executive functions include working memory, attentional control, inhibition, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Whether at work or while learning a new hobby, it’s common to struggle with staying focused. Brain training can help strengthen your cognitive ability and your attention span.

Dr. Amber Gordon is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in surgery and treatment of the brain, spine, and peripheral nerve disorders and is the physician leader of the Infirmary Neuroscience Center of Excellence. "We all know how important it can be to exercise your muscles, but it is equally important to exercise your brain,” she said. “Simple activities or games like crossword puzzles, memory games, or even video games can help protect your brain against aging and can even help boost your overall brain function and connectivity.”

While it may not be obvious, memory has a lot to do with success. Memory directly impacts your primary cognitive capabilities and the functions needed to be successful. Exercising your brain muscles is important to staying sharp. Try some brain training today!
