A Journey of Strength: Octavia Preston’s Story

Octavia Preston has trusted Mobile Infirmary as her healthcare provider since the late 1970s. But in early 2024, a seemingly routine change in her breathing led her down a life-altering path.

“At first, I didn’t think much of it,” Ms. Preston recalls. “It was cold and sinus season, and I assumed it was just asthma.”

But as her symptoms progressed and her voice began to change, her primary care physician suspected something more serious. After seeing specialists, Ms. Preston received a diagnosis that would redefine her daily life—Myasthenia Gravis (MG), a rare neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness in the voluntary muscles.

Then came the hospitalizations. For Ms. Preston, the experience could have been overwhelming. Instead, she found herself surrounded by a team that provided expert medical care and unwavering support.

“The doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists all played a role in helping me understand my condition and regain my strength,” she says. “Even when I was on a ventilator, they kept me moving, walking me down the hallway to keep me active.”

One of those team members was Elisabeth Groeber, PT, DPT, who has worked closely with Ms. Preston throughout her journey.

“Ms. Preston is more than a patient—she’s a teacher,” says Groeber. “She chooses to stay alert during her treatments so she can help us learn. She allows students and colleagues to be part of her sessions, showing us firsthand what’s possible for a patient on a ventilator.”

Dr. Chris Southwood, a neurocritical care specialist at Infirmary Health’s Neuroscience Center of Excellence, has also been an integral part of her journey. With expertise in stroke neurology and neuroendovascular surgery, his team provides specialized care for patients like Ms. Preston, ensuring they receive the latest advancements in neurological treatment.

Through it all, Ms. Preston has remained positive and resilient—a mindset she believes is key to recovery.

“This journey has strengthened my faith,” she says. “I wake up every day knowing that God is holding me and guiding me through. My advice to others? Have faith, build a support system, stay open to learning, and keep a positive attitude. Your mindset can shape your recovery.”

For her care team, Ms. Preston’s presence is a gift.

“She lights up the room,” Groeber says. “Her attitude is infectious, and you can’t help but smile when you’re around her. She has taught us all so much.”

Mobile Infirmary’s Acute Care and Inpatient Therapy teams are honored to be part of Ms. Preston’s journey. Through their expertise, dedication, and compassion, they are proving that high-quality care is about more than just medicine—it’s about helping patients live their best lives, even in the face of adversity.
