Infirmary Health proudly announces that Dr. Mina Jacob, a structural and interventional cardiologist with Diagnostic & Medical Clinic, has successfully performed the first TriClip G4 procedure in Mobile and one of the first in the region. This innovative, minimally invasive treatment offers new hope for patients suffering from tricuspid regurgitation (TR). This condition causes blood to leak backward into the heart, leading to symptoms like fatigue, swelling, and shortness of breath.
“The tricuspid valve is sometimes referred to as ‘the forgotten valve’ because historically, it has received less attention compared to the mitral and aortic valves,” said Dr. Jacob. “Until recently, tricuspid regurgitation could only be treated surgically with open-heart surgery.”
For many TR patients, medication alone is not enough, and open-heart surgery may not be a viable option. The TriClip G4 system provides a groundbreaking alternative, allowing physicians to repair the tricuspid valve without major surgery. Using a catheter-based approach, the device is guided through a vein in the leg to clip together sections of the faulty valve, helping restore proper blood flow and improve quality of life.
“TriClip is the only FDA-approved device for tricuspid valve repair that offers a nonsurgical transcatheter approach and allows the patient to be discharged home the next day,” Dr. Jacob added.
While a handful of hospitals across the Gulf Coast have recently begun offering this procedure, Mobile Infirmary is among the first to bring this cutting-edge technology to our community. Dr. Jacob, who is board-certified in general and interventional cardiology, has a special interest in valvular heart disease and minimally invasive valve repair procedures. His expertise, along with the Heart & Vascular Institute’s commitment to innovation, ensures that patients in south Alabama and the surrounding region have access to the latest advancements in cardiac care.
“Our structural heart team coordinated and worked hard together to bring this new technology to Mobile Infirmary,” Dr. Jacob emphasized. “We are proud to be leading the way in expanding treatment options for patients with tricuspid regurgitation.”
By combining evidence-based science, state-of-the-art technology, and a collaborative heart team approach, Infirmary Health continues to drive progress in structural heart disease treatment. Introducing the TriClip G4 into our comprehensive structural heart program represents another step forward in providing life-changing solutions to patients with limited treatment options.
